Jan Kořán is a registered attorney in the Czech Bar Association. Jan Kořán concurrently graduated with a Master’s Degree from the Law Faculty of Charles University (majoring in Litigation) and Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University (majoring in Political Science), in both cases with honours.
From 1998-2007 he worked in the Kříž & Bělina law firm, first as an articling clerk and, after completing his bar exams with honours (2001), as an attorney.
As a practicing attorney Jan Kořán has long specialised in commercial law, environmental and energy law and issues of economic competition.
Since 1998 his work in the area of the environment has been primarily connected with packaging and waste management, though he has also contributed to legislative work. In addition to this his work in the area of environmental law has also included issues connected to the production of electricity, the special utilisation of water and radioactive waste storage sites. During his practice he has represented clients in several proceedings heard before the relevant administrative authorities, particularly the Ministry of the Environment.
He also specialises in competition law, both in the issues of the abuse of a dominant position and “cartel” agreements and in the sphere of concentrations of undertakings. He has participated in a series of cases before the Office for the Protection of Competition which primarily concerned the activities of clients operating in the energy, forestry, banking and transportation industries and in packaging and waste management. He has participated in conferences concerning the field of competition law.
In the field of the energy industry Jan Kořán has experience with providing legal services to important subjects primarily operating in electrical energy and natural gas. He has been involved in proceedings before the Energy Regulatory Office, for example. He prepares legal analyses in this area and contributes to the preparation of contractual documentation.
With regards to the field of commercial law, Jan Kořán has led teams of attorneys on due diligence projects in leading Czech and Slovak companies operating primarily in the energy industry. During these legal due diligence projects the legal situation of the audited entities were verified not only from the perspective of commercial and Community law, but practically from the perspective of all significant legal fields.
Jan Kořán has also long been involved in the issue of Community and syndicate law and the legal support of members of company bodies. He also has considerable experience in the area of contracts, where he has participated in a wide range of important transactions, and also with litigation, i.e. with proceedings before Czech and international arbitration courts and before general courts. Jan Kořán also lectures, particularly in the area of commercial law as well as “catalogue” companies, and he has been published in trade journals. He has applied his experience from acting on the Board of Directors of a housing association (since 1998) in the area of housing law.
He is a Šumava Mountain Sherpa.
